A quantum internet would transmit large volumes of data over fiber optic networks across immense distances at a rate that exceeds the speed of light. Early adopters include industries such as IT service providers, banking, energy, national health and security services. Eventually, the use of quantum networking technology in mobile phones could have broad impact on the lives of individuals around the world.
Efforts to build a Quantum Internet are underway in Europe, Japan, UK, US and China. Led by Cape Town's Quantum Computing Institute, Africa is now joining the effort. African Quantum Internet Alliance (AQIA) is an alliance with the ambition to build local quantum networks with future connectivity to a global Quantum Internet.
